Life sucks.........but not when I'm in my airplane.

What I am building:

I am building a Van's Aircraft RV-10 from a kit. The kit can be assembled in its entirety using just a pocket knife and roll of duct tape.

Where I fly:
My home airport is Mesa, AZ (KFFZ). Here are a couple of pictures of my airplane and where I fly.

Yep, I'm going to build an airplane...and not like that one I built out of 2x4's when I was a kid.

I currently own a Piper Dakota and was looking for a kit that has similar gas guzzling capability. I found the Van's RV-10 as the only all metal low wing design that meets my requirements.

I plan on building the kit pretty much as designed by Vans with the following changes:

Instead of the Lycoming, I am going to use an Allison V-12 engine with 4 bladed prop. It may be a little nose heavy but the 1,400 hp will more than make up for it.

I'm going to add two multi-purpose hard points, one on each  wing.  A pair of surplus 50 gallon drop tanks will greatly extend the range of the RV-10 for those non-stop Phoenix to New York hops I will be making. I'll have my name and address on the side of the tank in case I drop it through the roof of someone's house, then they can return it to me.

One other addition that has been lacking on any airplane I have flown, is a 20 mm cannon.  I get a case of air-rage every once in a while when stuck behind some slow trainer in the pattern. Or how about the guy that lingers on the runway and forces a go around?

After I replace the constant cord wing with a delta wing, this is what the finished product should look like. Except I am going to paint big shark teeth on the front of mine. I know Vans intends their kits to be day VFR flyers, but I'm leaning more toward an all weather ground attack fighter.

I will use this web site to publish my experiences as they occur. My intention is to share my design choices, share some humor and post my progress. My construction log is posted in the same order as the plans are organized and you should find pictures of interest for every main section.

The airplane is being built in Apache Junction, Arizona which is 35 miles east of Phoenix. Occasionally it gets hot here.
